«Untitled» - 2016 - Exhibition at CAC La Traverse - Alfortville -
This sculpture takes the form of a "collection" of 23 fir wood planks from Isère, placed on a white shelf. On each edge of the planks, the title of a work is punched. These titles name a work that will only exist within the object. The form of the book collection evokes the spectrogram of a reader's silent voice... The wooden planks/books have been covered with India ink and worked using a lutherie technique that reveals the wood's growth grain and the pattern of its waves. These surface moiré patterns are similar to those seen on the surface of water or in sonographic digital analyses of sound propagation on the surface of musical instruments... The growth rings are finally visible on the bare edge of the book and "reveal" in their lines the silent, dendrochronological history of the tree... The viewer is then invited to experience an impossible reading. Only the sound of their silent voice constitutes the promise of the story. These books exist in the same way as those that await being touched, handled, and taken from the shelves of a library, revealing to the future reader only their title engraved on their spine. The library is too vast... the titles constitute the promise of an encounter...
