"Les Bruiteurs" - Installation - Subjunctive Landscapes: sound installation, video, and conversation

A blue carpet covers the entire surface of the main hall. A 30-minute video (blue duotone) is projected onto the back wall. This screen displays text: three stage directions (instructions for orientation) relating to three different landscapes (a volcanic desert landscape, a cityscape under snow, and a nightscape, a view of a seaport). The video projected onto the text screen then appears superimposed; the film presents three "sound effects artists" interpreting the soundscapes of three landscapes: a singer, a percussionist, and a saxophonist. Three modules of armchairs (shaped like cross-sections of a landscape) are placed on the floor. Each armchair is equipped with a CD player and headphones, which loop the sound of three voices: interior monologues recounting three fictional narratives—two-minute audio short stories, each linked to one of the three landscapes described in the on-screen captions. Each armchair is also covered (under its slipcover) with diffusers of fragrant essences (lavender, seaweed, fir). The installation offers an experience of the absent image, of a missing landscape, a hollow space, perceptible only through sounds and smells.
